This report covers natural and synthetic graphite products, measured at producer value: graphite anode material for lithium-ion batteries, graphite electrodes for electric arc furnaces, specialty synthetic graphite for semiconductors, solar, nuclear and other high-purity uses, natural graphite for refractories, foundries, lubricants and brake linings, and other products such as aluminium smelter cathodes and expanded graphite. Natural flake that is processed into battery anodes is counted once, as anode material, so that no graphite is counted twice.
Natural graphite is mined, mainly as crystalline flake, and purified and shaped for its end use. Synthetic graphite is made by heating petroleum coke or needle coke to very high temperatures, and it supplies most battery anodes, all graphite electrodes and most specialty grades.
Graphite is the main anode material in lithium-ion batteries, and demand from electric vehicles and energy storage systems has made battery anodes the largest use of graphite. Anode makers expanded output quickly in 2025, and new projects for natural graphite mining and anode processing are being developed outside China to diversify supply.
Graphite electrodes benefit from the shift in steelmaking toward electric arc furnaces, which melt scrap and use less coal, and specialty graphite is used in semiconductor equipment, silicon carbide production and solar ingot furnaces.
However, anode capacity in China has grown faster than demand, keeping prices low, electrode makers face weak steel markets and low prices, specialty graphite demand fell with the slowdown in solar and semiconductors, and export controls and trade cases add uncertainty for buyers outside China.
The global Graphite market is mainly classified based on type and application. By type, the market is segmented into synthetic graphite and natural graphite. Based on application, the market is divided into battery anodes, graphite electrodes, refractories and foundry, specialty uses in semiconductors, solar and nuclear, and others, including lubricants, brake linings, expanded graphite and cathodes.
By type, synthetic graphite accounts for the largest share, because most battery anodes, all graphite electrodes and most specialty grades are synthetic. Natural graphite is used in a smaller share of anodes and in refractories, foundries, lubricants and expanded graphite products.
By application, battery anodes account for about half of the market and are the fastest-growing use, followed by graphite electrodes for steelmaking. Specialty graphite is a smaller but higher-value segment, and refractories, foundries and other uses make up the rest.
Asia-Pacific is expected to hold the largest share of the global market. China mines most of the world's natural graphite, makes almost all battery anode material and more than half of the world's graphite electrodes, and is the largest producer of specialty graphite. Japan, South Korea and India are important producers of electrodes, specialty graphite and anode material.
Asia-Pacific is also expected to grow fastest, led by battery production in China and new anode and battery plants in Southeast Asia, India and South Korea. Africa is a growing source of natural graphite, with output rising in Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar.
North America and Europe make graphite electrodes and specialty graphite and are building battery plants that need anode material, with several graphite mining and processing projects under development to reduce reliance on imports from China.
Some of the major competitors in the global Graphite market include BTR New Material Group Co., Ltd., Ningbo Shanshan Co., Ltd., Hunan Zhongke Electric Co., Ltd., Shijiazhuang Shangtai Technology Co., Ltd., Shanghai Putailai New Energy Technology Group Co., Ltd., Fangda Carbon New Material Co., Ltd., Resonac Holdings Corporation, GrafTech International Ltd., HEG Limited, Graphite India Limited, Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd., SGL Carbon SE, Toyo Tanso Co., Ltd., Henan Wuxing New Materials Technology Co., Ltd., and Syrah Resources Limited.
The Graphite industry is moderately concentrated, with a handful of Chinese companies leading battery anode material, a mix of Chinese, Japanese, Indian, US and European companies in graphite electrodes, and specialists in specialty graphite and natural graphite mining. Companies compete on cost, product quality and customer qualification, and are expanding capacity, integrating graphitization and processing, and building plants outside China to serve battery makers in other regions.
Ans: The Graphite market was valued at XX billion US$ in 2025 and is projected to reach YY billion US$ by 2033, at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period.
Ans: The main driver is demand for graphite anode material in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage.
Ans: Asia-Pacific is expected to have the largest share of the Graphite market and to grow fastest.
Ans: Battery anodes are expected to dominate the Graphite market by application.
Ans: China controls exports of several graphite products. Controls announced in October 2025, including those on synthetic graphite anode material, were suspended until 10 November 2026, and in September 2026 China confirmed that the wider trade truce with the United States would be extended to 10 January 2027.
China supplies most of the world's natural graphite and almost all battery anode material, so its export rules matter for every battery maker outside China. In October 2025 China announced export controls on synthetic graphite anode material, lithium batteries, superhard materials and rare earth items. In November 2025, after a trade arrangement with the United States, it suspended those measures until 10 November 2026, and separately suspended, until 27 November 2026, a rule that called for stricter checks on end users of graphite exported to the United States.
In September 2026 China's commerce ministry confirmed that the trade truce with the United States, which had been due to end on 10 November 2026, would be extended to 10 January 2027, and in October the US Trade Representative proposed extending its own suspended measures to 9 January 2027. At the time of writing China had not published a formal announcement changing the dates of the graphite suspensions, so exporters are watching for one; if the controls apply again, exporters of anode material would need licences for affected shipments. Battery makers in Japan, South Korea, Europe and North America have been building stocks and qualifying suppliers outside China, and new mines and processing plants are being developed in Africa, North America, Europe and Southeast Asia.
The United States also investigated imports of Chinese anode material. The Commerce Department confirmed anti-dumping and anti-subsidy rates in February 2026, but in March 2026 the International Trade Commission found that the imports did not injure the US industry, so no duties were imposed. This report expects export controls to shift where graphite is processed and raise costs for some buyers rather than reduce total demand, and treats the formal extension of the suspensions and the outcome of talks before January 2027 as the main near-term uncertainty.
