Fertilizers and crop nutrients are the materials farmers add to soil, crops or irrigation water to supply the nutrients that plants need to grow. The market covers nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonia, urea and ammonium nitrate, phosphate fertilizers such as DAP, MAP and triple superphosphate, potash fertilizers such as muriate of potash and sulfate of potash, and secondary and micronutrient products that supply sulfur, magnesium, zinc, boron and other elements.
Miners, gas-based nitrogen producers, phosphate processors, blenders and distributors, cooperatives, retailers and farmers all play a part. Because fertilizer is made from natural gas, phosphate rock, potash ore and sulfur, which are found in a small number of countries, the market is closely tied to energy prices, shipping routes and trade policy. This report treats supply security and price volatility as central themes and follows the market from manufacture to use on the farm. Animal feed supplements, crop-protection chemicals and seeds are adjacent categories and sit outside the core scope.
Every harvest removes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from the soil, and none of the three has a substitute, so farmers must replace them to keep yields up. Demand is supported by growing populations, rising food and feed needs, limited new farmland and policies that favour higher yields on existing land. Use has grown fastest in South America and in parts of Africa, where cropped area and farm output are expanding.
Newer products add to demand. Enhanced-efficiency fertilizers, controlled-release granules, liquid and fertigation products, and precision application that matches the dose to the field help farmers use less nutrient for the same crop, and governments and buyers increasingly ask for lower nutrient losses and lower emissions. Producers are also investing in new mines and plants, including lower-carbon ammonia, to widen supply.
However, fertilizer prices swing sharply, and farmers can delay purchases or cut application rates when prices rise, which hurts demand and makes planning hard for producers. Supply is concentrated: nitrogen depends on low-cost natural gas, most of the world's phosphate rock reserves are in one country in North Africa, and a few countries dominate potash. In 2026, disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for Gulf exports of urea, ammonia and sulfur, pushed fertilizer prices to their highest level since 2022 before they eased, a reminder of how quickly trade shocks reach farmers. Export restrictions have added to the uncertainty.
The global Fertilizer and Crop Nutrients market is mainly classified based on nutrient type, form, crop type and application mode. On the basis of nutrient type, the market is segmented into nitrogen fertilizers, phosphate fertilizers, potash fertilizers, and secondary and micronutrients. Based on form, the market is divided into dry and granular, liquid and suspension, and controlled-release and specialty fertilizers. By crop type, the market is categorized into cereals and grains, oilseeds and pulses, fruits and vegetables, and other crops. On the basis of application mode, the market is segmented into soil application, foliar application and fertigation.
On the basis of nutrient type, nitrogen fertilizers, led by urea and ammonia-based products, are expected to hold the largest share. Nitrogen is the nutrient used in the greatest quantity worldwide, because cereals such as rice, wheat and maize respond strongly to it and it is lost from the soil every season. Phosphate and potash are used in smaller amounts but are essential for root growth and crop quality, and demand for them is growing fastest in Asia and South America. Liquid, controlled-release and fertigation products are small today and are expected to grow faster than conventional granules.
Asia-Pacific is expected to hold the largest share of the global market. China and India are the two largest users of fertilizer in the world, and the region also makes much of the world's ammonia and mines much of its phosphate rock. Large farming populations, government support for fertilizer use and heavy rice and wheat production sustain demand, although growth in the largest markets has been slow in recent years as policies encourage more efficient use. Several Asian buyers are exposed to price and shipping shocks because they import fertilizer or the energy and raw materials to make it.
North America is a large, mature market. The United States and Canada use large amounts of nitrogen, phosphate and potash on corn, wheat and oilseeds. Canada is the world's largest potash producer, and the United States makes much of its nitrogen from low-cost natural gas, but it imports most of its potash and part of its phosphate rock.
Europe's use of fertilizer has been flat to falling for a decade, shaped by high energy costs, nutrient-management rules and the push to cut emissions. Russia and Belarus are major producers of potash and ammonia whose exports supply many other markets.
South America is expected to be the fastest-growing region. Brazil is one of the largest users of fertilizer in the world and its cropped area has expanded, and use of potash and phosphate in the region has grown faster over the past decade than in North America, Europe or Asia-Pacific. The United States Geological Survey expects Asia and South America to lead growth in potash and phosphate use to 2029.
The Middle East and Africa are central to supply. Morocco holds the largest phosphate rock reserves in the world, and Gulf producers make large volumes of ammonia, urea and sulfur, so the region's exports shape global prices and its shipping routes were at the centre of the 2026 price shock. Demand within Africa is small today but is growing as farmers expand fertilizer use.
Some of the major competitors in the global Fertilizer and Crop Nutrients market include Nutrien Ltd., Yara International ASA, The Mosaic Company, CF Industries Holdings, Inc., OCP Group, ICL Group Ltd., K+S AG, EuroChem Group AG, PhosAgro, SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited, and Coromandel International Limited.
The Fertilizer and Crop Nutrients industry is moderately concentrated. A small number of large miners and integrated producers dominate potash and phosphate, while nitrogen is made by many companies close to low-cost natural gas, including state-owned and cooperative producers. Companies compete on cost position, access to raw materials and logistics, and are looking to strengthen their positions through capacity expansions, long-term supply agreements, lower-carbon ammonia projects, specialty and enhanced-efficiency products, and downstream distribution.
Ans: The Fertilizer and Crop Nutrients market was valued at XX million US$ in 2025 and is projected to reach XX million US$ by 2033, at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period.
Ans: Enhanced-efficiency and specialty fertilizers, lower-carbon ammonia, new potash and phosphate capacity, precision application and fast-growing demand in South America and Africa offer major opportunities.
Ans: The main driver is the need to raise crop yields on limited farmland to meet food and feed demand, since nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium have no substitutes.
Ans: Asia-Pacific is expected to have the largest share of the market, led by China and India, the two largest users of fertilizer.
Ans: The nitrogen fertilizers segment is expected to dominate by nutrient type, led by urea and ammonia-based products.
